The hard fight to put down the Mau Mau uprising in Kenya in the mid-1950s was an extraordinary effort because the Unted Kingdom was in dire economic straits. Dedan Kimathi proved a worthy opponent. "Witch doctor Kingori regarded all the Mau Mau in the forest as 'his children.' Nothing would alter his religious belief that 'Kinyanjui had been sent by Ngai to collect his children of the forest together,' and he was certain that the Land Rovers we used to bring the gang out of the forest were the maguru ma Ngai or 'the legs of God.' He had entered the jungle three years before, often administering Mau Mau oaths n the reserve." The author does not see the rebels as freedom fighters! No notes/ index.
