Anna as a young girl accompanies her father on his union job errands. He veers into the underworld and the mob and then abandons the family when she is 14. Five years later it is WWII and she is working as a diver at the NY Naval Yard. She has a chance meeting in a nightclub with someone she met several years earlier when she was with her father. Told in alternating chapters is the story of her father's life narrated by him. Lots of interesting history regarding navy divers, the NY mob/syndicate, the merchant marine, and life as a woman at the shipyard during the war. I found the mob stuff the least interesting and the shipyard/merchant marine the most interesting. Good characters and I liked how the story between father and daughter ended and how things ended overall for Anna.

Really enjoyed this book and it's female protagonist who spiritedly pushes past boundaries for women during World War 2.
