The "Superwoman" stereotype of the woman who "does it all" is alive & well,
but for different reasons today. Years ago, the woman who strived for this was motivated by achievement, by "I can!" Today's Superwoman "does it all" because she knows that her husband won't lift a finger even if she asks him to (and asks him nicely.) Today's Superwoman subscribes to that image out of necessity.
I picked up this book bc I thought it could help me understand my husband and with understanding, we could work through challenges. I'm the Mom and the bread-winner and feel frustrated that hubby refuses to take some responsibility in child-rearing. At age 39, he thinks his friendships and his own leisure time are greater priorities than his family. It's a harmful attitude for our family.
This book has helped me understand the reasons many relationships & many families have changed; I've noticed these behaviors and not understood why until reading this. Her logic and research makes perfect sense and I wonder how today's kids (my own 4 kids included) will develop as a result.
Yes, this book helped me understand my hubby - I am thankful for that. The only shortcoming of the book is that it doesn't offer suggestions for what Superwoman can do to help hubby to Man Up.
It does give me ideas for helping my sons to Man Up so that hopefully they can avoid some of the challenges we face when it's their turn to navigate pre-adulthood and to raise a family.
