There aren't too many novels out there about the Spanish Civil War but this is one of them. Author actually was a pilot who fought in the war for the losing side and has set down his experiences in novel form. You should read this one and Hemingway's "For Whom the Bell Tolls" to get the true flavor of that civil conflict.
