Historical fiction set in Colonial St. Augustine, Northern Florida. Based on real people of the time. Eugenia Price is a masterful storyteller.
Eugenia Price fashions a great fictional story mixed in with the true history of St. Augustine. Maria is the wife of a soldier stationed at the newest British colony, and though life is difficult for her, she meets every challenge head-on. Yet, she must eventually deal with the fact that sometimes her strength is not enough and she must rely on Someone stronger.
Back cover: In this captivating tale, Eugenia Price paints a vivid picture of the tumultuous historic and political events that shaped the life of Mary Evans, a remarkably independent woman in the colonial south. Born in Charles Town, South Carolina, Mary, a skilled midwife, accompanied her first husband, British soldier David Fenwick, when his regiment fought the Spanish in Cuba. When Spain agreed to give all of Florida in exchange for the city of Havana, Mary (who became known as Maria) and her husband were forced to relocate to the newly British garrison town of St. Augustine, Florida.
Book one of Eugenia Price's Florida trilogy.
From back cover:
"...inspiring story of a unique American heroine--a woman whose strength and resourcefulness overcome every obstacle to survial in an untamed and turbulent land. Maria is a true pioneer, valiant, hard-working, independent. But she is also a vibrant, flesh-and-blood woman, tempestuous in passion, steadfast in love."
A bit too romance novel for my liking but the historical facts and living in the area that it all took place over-shadowed the negative. A story of strength and courage in the early days of of our nation.
This is Eugenia Price's inspiring story of a unique American heroine-a woman whose strength and resourcefulness overcame every obstacle to survival in an untamed and turbulent land as is struggled for independence. Maria is a true pioneer, hardworking, valiant, self-reliant. But she is also a vibrant, flesh and blood woman, tempestuous in passion, steadfast in love
These are very simple reading.
I thought perhaps it might be more appropriate for a girl age 14 and above, however, it was entertaining.
Author - Eugenia Price. Her stirring novel of love, turmoil and adventure in revolutionary America.
A very good historical novel.
