I ordered a book which made it to my local post office on the 13th and had an expected delivery date of the following day (Valentine's Day). However, at about 10:30 on the 13th, it was marked as delivered. I know I've read here that sometimes it's just marked as delivered when it's put on the truck to go out, so when I didn't receive any notification from my building's mail room that a package had arrived that day, I just assumed it would show up the next day, as expected.

It's now Friday and there's still been no sign of the supposedly delivered package, and when I went to my mail room, they confirmed they didn't have it and that they don't know what's happened, once they looked at the tracking information. I'm still waiting a few days longer on their advice, but if the package doesn't show up after all, what's the proper course of action here? The USPS says it was delivered, but it's nowhere to be found. I think the sender already got their credit since it was scanned as delivered, but I want to be able to thank them for the book and to confirm it's in good condition, at least.

Do you have the delivery confirmation number for it - I can see more info then you can.  I've got one for today that looks like it should be delivered but looking internally I can also see it was missent to a neighboring town and now shows "out for delivery" - that ain't gonna happen today unless someone else gets my book which would be sadfrown.

USPS updated their software a few months ago, and under the new scan system if a book says 'delivered' you should have it in hand.  A few PO's still use incorrect delivery scans but it would be an ongoing situation you would probably be aware of.

Keep pushing your post office to look for the book, it's their responsibilty to properly deliver it.  You can also contact the sender, they can contact their PO who may put additional pressure on your PO to look harder for the book.

Here's an example of the new scan format:

  • 2/9/2012 2:10 PM - Electronic Shipping Info Received - MAPLE VALLEY,WA
  • 2/9/2012 3:00 PM - Electronic Shipping Info Received - MAPLE VALLEY,WA
  • 2/11/2012 3:01 PM - Acceptance - MAPLE VALLEY,WA
  • 2/11/2012 8:47 PM - Enroute - SEATTLE,WA
  • 2/12/2012 1:32 AM - Enroute - KENT,WA
  • 2/13/2012 9:25 PM - Enroute - KEARNY,NJ
  • 2/14/2012 1:24 AM - Enroute - TETERBORO,NJ
  • 2/14/2012 7:53 AM - Arrival at Unit - MAHWAH,NJ
  • 2/14/2012 9:05 AM - Unknown-PC - MAHWAH,NJ
  • 2/14/2012 9:15 AM - Unknown-OF - MAHWAH,NJ
  • 2/14/2012 10:54 AM - Delivered - MAHWAH,NJ

Arrival at Unit = package arrived at the delivery post office
Unknown-PC = sorting & processing
Unknown-OF = out for delivery
Delivered  =  delivered to your mailbox (or to your person)

Under the previous system, some PO's substituted 'delivered' scans for the "arrival at unit" scan, then took a few days to sort and actually deliver packages.

Last year, when my regular carrier went on vacation, every media mail package was scanned as delivered, yet none were. The sub had tossed them into a box. Do take the number and contact the PO. They need to start a search and see what is going wrong on their end.

A book I sent on January 31 came back to my post office, though it had been scanned as delivered. I went through the whole ordeal with them -- the address is valid, recipient hasn't had any issues getting mail, etc. They turned it right back to its destination and it's showing delivered today. I hope the member gets the book today!

I have to say that I frequently have books scanned as delivered that don't show up for a day or 2.  My carrier walks, and the ones that are scanned this way invariably come on a truck that only comes by twice a week.

The book has been found! It turns out there was a snafu with the mail room and it ended up in the wrong place. Thanks for all your help, everyone! It was at least reassuring to know this has happened to other people.

At the PO I work at nothing can be scanned as delivered until it is either put into someone's box or physically handed to them. At that point, responsibility for the package transfers to the customer. I'm not sure it's right if packages are scanned as delivered when they are put on the truck, because very technically they are still the responsibility of the PO. Why say it is delivered when it obviously is not? If it's a large package and the person is not at home to receive it, it has to go back to the PO, scanned as "attempted."

I had a package scanned as delivered though I did not receive it. Going to the post office and trying to find out what happened yielded nothing but frustration... the route supervisor and my regular carrier checked with the sub who said he delivered it... I was told 'end of story',    It was the sub on the route who had delivered it to the wrong apartment when my regular guy was on vacation.  I got a knock on my door a week later from the person who received my package.  USPS was NOT helpful.
