This is the best and most comprehensive book that have read on Martha Dandridge Custis Washington's life. Martha showed intelligence and wisdom in the choice of both of her husbands. She was an astute woman in business matters. Martha went from a poor gentry family to very wealthy family with her first marriage which took a lot of ability to advocate for herself the position of Daniel Custis's bride. Daniel was elated with Martha . No doubt it was the happiest 7 years of his life. His wealth sustained Martha for the rest of her life. Martha knew well how to please her husbands but she was very vocal about her needs as well. Martha loved George but she was not often elated by his choices in life to be the General and the President. Martha did not care about fame and fortune, she would have been happier to be a plantation owners wife and be surrounded by her beloved family.
