This book takes you in-depth as to the why's and what-for's of Mary Todd Lincoln...the "strange, eccentric, troubled" wife of one of the nations greatest Presidents; Abraham Lincoln. It takes you to how they met, why he chose her as his wife, and why she did some of the things she was chastised for by the cruel public who thought her unfit to be a "first-Lady". It explains the deaths of her sons, the assassination of her husband, and her friendless, empty, lonely life after Lincoln's death. Mary Todd Lincoln is probably one of the most MISUNDERSTOOD figure of history, and in an era when psychological help was not available for deep rooted trauma of the likes she suffered, it gives you a clearer understanding of who the REAL Mary Todd Lincoln was. A sad and yet mystifying read, that leaves you with a hurt that haunts you for what she suffered through. You come away with a sense of who she really was, and with a pity she so deserved but never got. A great read, with smooth and concise writing that makes you think it's a love-story and makes you forget it's a historical account of a true, albeit tragic life.
