Anyone else enjoying this miniseries on PBS?  It is a Victorian-ish era period drama about a young lady who goes to work in a glamorous department store in the big city.  Am currently into episode 4 and it reminds me a bit of the Selfridge's series that Masterpiece did earlier in the year, if you liked that.

Here's PBS's website for the show: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/masterpiece/programs/paradise/

It is based on the book The Ladies' Paradise by Emile Zola.  I've not read any Zola -- anyone able to say anything about his writing? Recommend any particular title(s)?

I've been watching it too and it reminds me a lot of Selfridges.  The one thing I find remarkable (humorous) is that every dress that Catherine Glenndening wears is a variation of the same dress, just with different trimming colors!  Maybe that was typical of the time, I just don't know.

So, DH and I watched it over the weekend--it's pretty good, but a little slow. Definitely reminds me of Selfridge's----very odd that they'd produce two shows with such similar plots at the same time.
