Each volume in the masterpieces of the modrn theatre series presents the work of a national group of playwrites which has significantly influenced and contributed to the total achievement of the modern theatre. Nearly fifty plays are offered, over twenty in new translation. Together with these master works, each book includes comentaries in most instances by the dramatists themselves and general introduction to the modern theatre, its concerns and history a preface describing the special spirit and contribution of each nationl drama, introductory notes on each playwright, a concordance of works, and bibliographies. Each volume contains two kinds of plays recognized masterpieces that epitomize modern dramatic expression in the country or area of origin; and plays difficult to obtain, or wich, through lack of adequate teranslation, have not recieved the notice they deserve!
