When the little school at Mayfield Crossing is closed, Meg and her friends are all excited about going to the bigger, newer school at Parkview. Most of all, they want to play ball on the big deluxe ballfield at Parkview. They never expect that they won't be invited to play at all...or that they won't be welcomed at Parkview in any way.
At Mayfield nobody ever thought about who was white and who was black. They were all just friends. At Parkview, it's different, and Meg and her brother are not welcome. But the Mayfield kids stick together so they're all outsiders. It's the first time any of them really understands what it means to be different...how it can cause trouble...and how it can help people learn.
