This is a collection of essays on media (movies, music, theater, television, etc) and how they impact society and are impacted by society. The book was written in the early seventies so much of the material chronicles music and art of the 60s. There are some interesting articles here.

Essays include:

The Two Worlds of American Art
Mass Communication, Popular Taste and Organized Social Action
Film: Form and Sense (Includes a demonstration of how short stories are made into movies)
Television: Window on Culture or Reflection in the Glass?
On Modern Theater: The Theater of Revolt
The Poetry of Rock
The Music of the Beatles
What is a Ballad?
The Visual Arts: The Modern Eye
The Photographer's Eye

The book also contains plays, poems, lyrics, photographs, and artwork, a sampling of the art it discusses.
