This book was written more than 90 years ago but is still relevant. My favorite chapter was the one on Marco Polo, because his life was so remarkable. The other chapters are also worthwhile. They have to do with ordinary people of several hundred years ago who happened to leave some record of military service or household journals (that is, accounting) or in a census.
