Hey readers....just wondering if there is a way to edit the privacy of our member name (not nickname)...for instance....instead of it showing Krista C. under my profile, perhaps show JUST my nickname????? I've searched high and low under settings/privacy ect. to no avail!

Thanks!

Hmmm... I don't know. I haven't seen where you can.

I think this is the reason why some members signed up using only their first initial, so that (for example) E.F. would be the name in parentheses rather than Elmer F. Then your books would come addressed to E. Fudd and show up on the return address that way. But I believe you would have to contact PBS to change that information. Not sure though.

There must be a way.  I know LG has just that.  I don't know if she has that as her mailing name too.  That might be an idea for you to just use initials.  You could ask her what she did.....

Are you opposed to someone knowing your name is Krista?

If I'd known that I would have choosen to only go by my initials as well. I'm not even sure why it is necessary to show a real name in the first place. Personally I don't welcome it at all.

I like it when I can call someone by their name vs. a nickname or initials in the forums.  just seems more personal to me.

Contact Customer Service and ask them to change it.  Although I signed up for PBS using just my initials, I wasn't able to do the same thing for SwapADVD or SwapACD.  Customer Service did it for me.   Don't know if they'll let you use your nickname though.

There are 3 Krista C's listed in the member directory (one of the others is my sister), and there are probably more that don't have public profiles, so you're already pretty anonymous. You can also hide your address from people who request your books by choosing to use the PBS office as your return address on your account settings page. That way the only people who get both your full name and address are people who are actually sending you books.

If that's still a concern, then send a feedback to the PBS Team using the Contact Us link at the bottom of the page and ask them to change the first name on your account to K.

Kristin - Is that you in your avatar? I'm not sure why you'd post your picture in your avatar but object to a common first name plus initial. The combination of the two is worse than just a first name plus initial and you have both. I also think that just posting your picture online (if you have online fears) is one of the worst things you can do.

I like the first name idea - but I understand why others wouldn't.

I understand.  I'm not terribly comfortable having my first name there.  If I wanted to be called by my real name on the forums, I would have picked a username that contained my name.  It still creeps me out when people respond to me as "Jennifer" rather than "niffir" in threads, since I'm not used to people knowing or (if they know it) using my real name online.

ETA I don't mind having my photos up.  To me that's different than having my real name out there.

I never bothered me about my 1st name.  I always figured for the price of postage someone could post a book to my wishlist, or even pretend to do so, then they would have my address.  I also like to refer to people by their names.

I respect the fact that it makes some people uncomfortable, but I don't think there is a way a member could change it themselves,  I believe you would have to contact PBS.

Under settings, my name is recorded as "L. Lastname" (it begins with a G) so when it's used in the forums, it shows up only as "L.G."  Richard would have to change it for you - it is determined when you join the site.
