In the early part of 1836, much of John Sharp's time and attention was occupied by the important subject of his intended marriage with his friend Hannah Irwin, then engaged as governess at Wigton School. Soon after the Yearly Meeting he took a journey into the North, and visited his relatives at Darlington, proceeding afterwards to Carlisle and Wigton, in pursuance of the object he had in view. On returning to Croydon, and consulting a valued friend and counsellor on this subject, he thus records the advice he received —" Keep thy eye steadily fixed on him who has watched over thee all thy life long; eye the pointing of his finger; and he will cause that to be brought about which is most consistent with his will." He thus writes under date of Eighth Month 7th:— " First-day.—My mind too much occupied with the exciting events of the last few weeks. Oh that all may be held subservient to the will of him, whose loving kindness and gracious condescension ought to call forth the tribute of gratitude, thanksgiving, and entire devotedness ! " May 1 become more sensible of this, and by his grace act accordingly. " He who is infinite in love and mercy, has indeed been my gracious and long-suffering Leader and Guide ; and has abundantly verified in my experience the fulfilment of his promise,—' In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he will direct thy paths.' May the consciousness of this induce me more fully to confide in him through all the mutations of this changing scene, and yield a cheerful acquiescence in his will in all things.
