Great book! It is the second book in Sara Orwig's Southern trilogy. New Orleans is first, Memphis, and then Atlanta.

From the back cover:
MEMPHIS where the power of the North met the gallantry of the South in a searing, shifting struggle for the future of a nation and the survival of a way of life.
MEMPHIS where spirited, stunning Sophia Merrick picked up the reins left by her father and brothers when they went off to war--as she faced the dangers of battle and the desires of an invader.
MEMPHIS where ruggedley handsome, hard-riding cavalryman Caleb O'Brien fought for the Southland as his forefathers had for Ireland---and where he showed a girl who scorned the straitlaced limits of her sex how much a woman she was and how powerful passion could be.
MEMPHIS the unforgettable saga of a man, a woman, a struggle, a city--and of a love that soared above the smoke of battle.
