The broad based analysis draws upon excavation reports, archival material and a comparative examination of the physical characteristics of stick shabtis in the Petrie Museum and from other collections, in order to challenge the generally held view that besides their inscriptions these simple figures are little more than, to quote Flinders Petrie, "mere scraps of rough wood".
