There is something about fairy tales that appeal to the child in me. I love to see how authors restructure my childhood's familiar tales. So it is with this one.

The story begins with the lovely Margrethe, only daughter of the king of the Northern Kingdom, secreted away in a convent, gazing at the sea when she views a figure of fantasy. The fish tail she sees belongs to a mermaid? And, the mermaid holds a man in her arms. She swims to shore and deposits him on the sand appealing to the princess to save him.

The mermaid kisses both the man and the princess changing both forever. Most of us remember how the mermaid gives up her enchanting voice to become human hoping to win the love of the man she rescued. In this tale, the man who is the son of the king of the Southern Kingdom, falls in love with the human he names Astrid. Meanwhile Margrethe's father learns of the encounter and spins his own version to drum support for invading the Southern Kingdom. The princess tries to convince her father otherwise.

Bonded by the encounter on the beach the destiny of both kingdoms hinges on the outcome. Both women are in love with the prince but only one can marry him. I found the climax of this story delightful and I hope others who choose to read the book agree.
