Two homely serving maids, tired of being ignored by all prospective husbands in their village, decide to take matters into their own hands. A local legend says that a merman's kiss will give them beauty and good luck.
The great lady who employs them at her chateau hears of this and intervenes on their behalf, giving them specific instructions that must be followed to the letter if all is to go well. Sneaking out at night to hunt the merman, the girls are so frightened when they find him that the older sister indadvertently forgets to insist on paying for the kiss.....this mistake will cause dire consequences for the younger sister, but most of all for the unfortunate merman.
Laura Lond's rendering of a classically themed fairy tale is enchanting....it's only flaw being that it is too brief. I would have no problem with it being two or three times it's current length which would allow for greater depth and character development.
