In the Middle of the Night Author:Aileen Fisher "I always wondered how it would be in the middle of the night away from the light of the town where only the stars winked down." Each time the little girl put this thought into words, the grown-ups said: "Night is for bed. You're not an owl." — The little girl went on wondering just the same. Then her birthday arrived and that was the present... more » she chose--to go outdoors in the middle of the night.
And what discoveries she made! All the dandelions had gone to sleep and so had the bees, while moths feasted on honey and a hungry mouse looked wistfully from the door if its house. There were glimpses of night-shine on the dark surface of a brook, a frog on a log, and, from an open place on a little hill, a million stars.
Aileen Fisher has created a poem of lovely lilting lines, and Adrienne Adams' illustrations add a further poetry of their own. Boys and girls can share richly in this fine awakening to the mystery and beauty of night.« less
