I enjoyed this book about a woman in 1900's West Virginia who comes from a long line of midwives. Although midwivery plays a big role in the story, I felt it dealt more with each character's inability to overcome their fear of abandonment and be able to love. It was a touching story about how what we wish for ourselves and what we need are sometimes two very different things.

A great fiction work regarding a line of family midwifes on a mountain in prewar Appalachia. A great, easy read.
