I loved the format of this book. The author begins each chapter with a few pages of Martha's diary, then spends the rest of the chapter explaining the entries. The customs of the time, the specifics of that town and family, archaic words in the diary, and especially explanations of what Martha was saying and what it meant. This is one of the most fascinating diaries I have read.
