I need a place to retreat and peel off the burnt layers of skin that got blasted by Holly's Jesus Loving Momma Bear on the "Evolution Math Problem" thread.

My, my, my. What would Jesus think about such a thundering rant?

Ok Im trying very hard to be nice and not laugh at that but damn it was funny and so scary accurate. Tis cool with me if you sit here for a while. If you sit here long enough you might see a good conversation and even some disagreement that doesnt result in cries of persecution.

I honestly thought that Holly was about 12 to 15 years old.  And I thought: What is a teenager doing with pro-life propaganda as her signature? It wasn't until I linked onto her personal site that I realized that this was a 25-year-old with some really fundy beliefs.

At that point, I realized there is not arguing with any one so steeped in Kool-Aid.

Well there are a lot of people on here like that but just as many or more who are conservative who can hold a civil conversation and realize that disagreement is not an attack on them personally.

I only posted a few times and tried my darndest to be nice but grrrrrr... it makes me so frustrated when people pretend to understand science that even I acknowledge that I don't understand 100%.  I have a BS in biology, I work in a lab, but in spite of (or maybe because of) that I admit when I dont understand something instead of saying "Oh- I don't get it, therefore it must be false."

I came across this a while back, and while I know that some here have seen it, maybe it will be new to others.  It's called "50 Reasons Why I Reject Evolution" http://bobbie-the-jean.deviantart.com/journal/23586617/

Ok, i just spent the past two hours reading that thread, lol.

First of all I have to say, I am a historian, and I absolutely believe in the holocaust (sp?) second, wow, I would read Holly or her mom's posts and be screaming at the computer, and thankfully read the next posts from one of you and go "YES!"

So thanks for the entertainment, now I need to get to bed.

FTW Kari, that was awesome.

My favorites:

19.) Because I don’t understand why, if we share common ancestry with chimps, there are still chimps. And when someone with more than three brain cells in their head inevitably replies: “for the same reason Americans share common ancestry with Brits but there are still Brits, I can’t follow the logic. It’s just too big a leap. Who am I, Evil Knievel?

25.) Because I don’t realize that saying “microevolution is possible but macroevolution isn’t” is as stupid as saying “I can pick my nose for one second but I cannot pick it for 10 seconds.”

32.) Because the planet and all the life on it was designed for humans… kinda like how the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NY was designed specifically for the dust-bunnies that may accumulate on the floors.

38.) Because I have no imagination, learning is too much effort, I don’t like proven facts, change scares me, and I think deoxyribonucleic acid is something I’m supposed to clean my bathroom floors with.

48.) Because I’m a freethinker and freethinking really means ignoring anything that contradicts what I already believe.

Those were great - thanks for sharing!

Edited to add:  Welcome to the forum Laura.     Jesus loving mama bears is the reason this forum exists - we got tired of being sent to hell every other day on the Religion and Spirituality forum.

wow, i go away for a few hours and all hits the fan. I am sure if we all keep posting, holly and tammy will continue as well. I have seen it before, someone desperate for attention, posts controversial topics to get people stirred up and and then keep the controversy going so the attention doesnt stop. It is pathetic.

I read a chunk of it and then more or less ran away screaming as the whole thing was radioactive.

Yikes!  I really, really admire those of you who (remarkably patiently) entered the fray.  My temper gets the better of me which is no help.  What I find so baffling is this not-believing-in-evolution-malarkey is all about faith in certain beliefs, right?  The why even try to bring "math" into it if you're not posting simply to cause a giant dust-up, and then be in the position of yelling all wide-eyed, "But everyone is so mean.  I did nothing but post an opinion."  It's just so disingenuous.

Has anyone seen the "What does Jesus think of you?" quiz on facebook?  It's pretty hilarious, but pretty much none of it is printable here.

Its really not bothersome to me. I can tolerate (for the most part aside from unprovoked attacks) polarized topics even when they get heated. Hell Im usually the one that starts them.

Yes, but you have the benefit of the chair and the whip.

Sigh.  More things to add to my shopping list.  1 chair, lion-proof a plus, toothmarks not a problem...

You can borrow it. It works for several people at the same time. I'll have something else up there in a day or so anyway. I change my avatar pretty often.

Kari - that is one of the funniest things I've seen in a long, long time!

I finally went through and read the whole thread last night, and it was incredibly fascinating.  I'm really looking forward to going through and following up on all the links people provided.  As for Mama Bear and Cub - I really have no words.  Wait, yes, I have two: hostile and ignorant.  Oh, three: scary.  They remind me of the woman who stands with a microphone in front of the 42nd Street F train station telling everyone that they are going to Hell.  Whenever a celebrity dies she tells us all how they are hell-bound due to their wickedness.  To wit:  "Fay Wray is in hell...with Rick James, they are both in Hell."  I swear I'm not making this up.

>snort< If Fay Wray and all those other celebrities are in hell, that's where I wanna go!  I believe Billy Joel said it best, "I'd rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints."

I have been following and posting on the evolution thread.  Yes, keeping my head straight is a little difficult.  But not only does evolution fascinate me, but also the reasons why people are afraid to believe in it.  I actually feel like Tammy is starting to get it a little bit, which is more than I would have ever expected.  The reason she was so afraid of it, I think, is because she seems to have been miseducated on evolution in such a way to make it sound ridiculous and somehow was taught to fear it and passed that fear on to her daughter.  Tammy really is afraid that proving evolution means proving God doesn't exist.  She can't seem to understand that God and evolution can coexist.

Its so much more than that Veronika. Did you see the last thread they were in? It was calm until Tammy came in and started in with the you people type posts. They were all along the lines of you people who I dont agree with are all awful and mean. When in reality her first post in that thread was some of the most hostile and arrogant words Ive read here. Same thing with the evolution thread. I dont care if shes afraid we will prove god isnt real. She is the one that gets irrate then accuses everyone else of being hostile when prior to her visits to a thread its civil. Im tired of that mentality here. BTW she came and read this thread in which we all said exactly the same things about her as we said in the evolution thread but appearently us meanies are talking behind her back and being awful again.
