This is a really incredible novel set during a very disturbing period in Argentina's recent history. There are classic moments of the pathology of being an outsider. There is the history and personal stories and the fearful reality as the backdrop. It was frightening. Not a light read or good for mindless reading. But a really good book. Hard to get into at first and recommend sitting down for a few more extra pages than usual to get yourself started.

The "disappeared" of post-Peron Argentina is the topic of this novel, the story of the abduction of Pato Poznan, a young Jewish student, and the resulting collapse of his family. Somehow the horror and hopelessness is conveyed with humor--but this is most certainly not a funny book. It was one of the most powerful novels I've ever read. Nathan Englander is a phenomenon.
This is an amazing book. A very deep story, that takes place in Argentina during the Dirty War. It took me awhile to get into it, but I'm glad I stuck with it. This is not a light read. When I finished it I was profoundly sad. This will stay with me for a very long time.
