Subject: Missing ISBN ?

For the first time in six years, I've entered an ISBN to add a book, and the system told me, "We were unable to locate any books that matched your search parameters, or none were specified." Oddly enough, searching ISBNDB.com, eBay and Amazon also return a null result. Has anyone else had this happen? I'm thinking of reporting it to the Team, but I'm not sure what - if anything - they could do about it.

I've had it happen before. Is it an old book or foreign? Once you search for an ISBN, the system will sometimes automatically search and add it on its own. Since this one doesn't seem to be listed anywhere, that probably won't happen.

You can post the book without an ISBN. From your account page, click on the "post books" tab, at the bottom you'll see "If you still cannot find an ISBN for your book, then click here." Use that to enter all your book's information and it will be posted to your shelf. Your listing will show up when anyone searches for that book by title.

Happens all the time. I order books from discount sites and it happens frequently that they ship me an overstock copy from Canada, or Australia, etc. Those ISBNs are not usually in PBS.

I either post them with the ISBN that is on the book, and the system adds it, or I post them "without an ISBN" which generates a short 5 digit PBS number that allows the book to be added to your shelf.

In both cases, you have to type in the information for the book listing, so be careful to type it correctly!

Were you entering the ISBN on the search page or on the Post Books page? If you were on the search page, I wouldn't find the message all that odd, if you were on the Post Books page, then it is a little odd because it should just have you set up the book if it doesn't find it.

If you have a book that has a valid ISBN that is not in the system, it is always best to add it to the system from the Post Books page and not add it as a book without an ISBN. By setting it up under the proper ISBN it is now there to be used by anyone when they search or post where the short ISBN generated by posting it as a book without an ISBN is a single use number that no one is going to associate with the book if they are looking for it.

Thanks for all of the responses. I don't know if I'm glad to see that this is not an isolated case or not. indecision

First off, this is not a foreign or an old book. It is a 2012 reprinting of a title that has been reprinted before, with the first edition being in 1989. It *is* a somewhat niche book, having been published by the "Truth In Action Ministries".

As to how I came up with that error... Yes, I did receive it from the 'Advanced Book Search' page and not the 'Post Your Book' page. Lately, I've taken to seeing if a book has a large number of copies in the system before actually posting it. (Although Team PBS poo-poo's this practice, I just don't see the logic in wasting space on my Bookshelf for a title with hundreds of copies already in the system.)

I have used the 'Post a Book Without an ISBN' option before, I just thought it odd that such a new book, published multiple times here in the US and having an ISBN number wouldn't be in the database here (or the other places that I checked).

I will just go ahead and post it; hopefully someone will want it and no how to find it. wink

Thanks, again!
