Jennie Gallant is a pen name of Joan Smith, known for her funny, fast moving regency adventures and farces.

Except for the aunt who went on and on about her leech collection, I found this a good, fast read. Our heroine Maria's father is an anti-Napoleon fanatic, and now that Napoleon has lost the war and is awaiting the British government's decision as to what to do with him, dad is expecting Napoleonic agents to stage an escape from the ship Bellerophon. An agent has been sent to investigate and someone else to stage the escape, but which is which? Little bit of history, lots of peppery dialogue, and a likeable heroine. Too many leeches for me, however.
