An old horse, too wily to be caught, and left therefore in the high hill pasture, where the sudden winter storm threatened her also with cold, hunger, and death. To the boy, the presence of the horse seemed a miracle. To the horse, the sight of the boy brought back memories of ropes, riders, and work, all of which she avoided when possible.
