For years, I've carried a book with me when I leave the house. If I'm in line at the post office, the supermarket, or the bank, I'm reading. I read while I'm cooking. I read while doing anything that does not require my undivided attention.

Last night, I realized I must be reading too much because my nails have grown long and beautiful (a sure sign I haven't been doing anything that could cause them to break like, oh I don't know, housework maybe?). I figured if I want to keep them that way, I'd have to break out the nail polish. I haven't painted my nails since Clinton was president. Fortunately, my 12-year-old daughter has a supply and she keeps them in the fridge so they stay fresh (something she read in some girly magazine). Anyway, I painted one hand, read a chapter holding the book with the other hand, gave the same hand a second coat, read a chapter, then painted the other hand, read a chapter, gave that hand a second coat, then read some more.

I usually don't have the patience for beauty routines because they usually involves sitting still. But I can do this! I can apply a facial mask and read for the prescribed time. The same with hair color, foot soaks, etc. I never could get into reading in the tub (the thought of getting my books wet horrifies me), but this other girly stuff I can do.

So what do y'all do while you're reading?

Pretty much anything. I do read (my keepers) in the tub. I read while cooking(not while I am stirring a pot of spaghetti), watching a non DVR'd tv show (can't stand commercials), pretty much anytime I have a free moment.

Not while Driving, I think that is dangerous. I one time saw a woman driving down a  four lane highway  reading a book. DANGEROUS.My H honked at her, didn't even faze her.

I, too, carry a book everywhere with me, and if I'm idle for any amount of time, I'm cracking that thing open. The one time I don't read, and I wish to God I could, is in the car (as a passenger) - I get car sick. I'm so jealous of people who can do that.

I read while exercising, watering the plants, washing the dishes. Listen to books on tape while hanging laundry.

I often read at my job. I work in an academic library & a door to the stacks is right behind my desk. LOL  When I need to get away, I can!

I read during commercials when watching TV, and sometimes while exercising on my Gazelle.  I have been known to clothespin a book to the curtains on the kitchen window above the sink so I can read while washing dishes.  I usually carry a book in my purse and of course, the one day that I don't is the day I get stuck in a doctor's office or eating lunch by myself.

So what do y'all do while you're reading?

read, mostly.  ;)  mainly i get so into it that picking up a book for anything less than a full chapter just irritates me, plus i'll be oblivious to most anything else.  but i read on the couch while DH watches tv, and if i'm actually watching a show i'm not that into while reading something i'm really into there's a decent chance i'll pick up my book during commercials (and then forget to look up when the show starts again half the time).  i also read while on the elliptical trainer.  if i'm going somewhere with a waiting room - dr, dentist, car wash, etc - i bring a book, but i don't normally carry one with me.  i do read as a passenger in the car if it's going to be a longer trip (over 1 hr).

i usually don't read books while i'm eating.  i'll read the newspaper or do a sudoku puzzle instead.  i don't care if those get sauce or soup spilled on them.  :)

I use audiobooks and listen while I clean.

I keep an unpostable in the bathroom.

I read during commercials. If I know I'm going somewhere where I might have to wait then I bring a book with me-usually the unpostable from the bathroom. I don't like to take postable books anywhere because I'm worried about forgetting them or damage.

I will frequently read while I'm surfing.  I'll have my book at the computer. I spend a few minutes checking the boards out, make a few posts, then read a few pages or a chapter, troll the boards again, read a few pages etc...,

Audiobooks are lovely during a long work commute.  It takes me about 2 weeks to do 10 discs (1 book).  This is the only thing I miss about my horrendous former 50-minute (each way) commute...

In the morning, I dry my hair upside down in a desperate attempt to get some volume, so I'll put a book on the floor and read while I'm drying my hair. :) I also have dial-up at home, so if I'm waiting for a page to load, I'll read a bit to pass the time.

Right now I'm working at the kitchen table with the TV on (Clean House - love that show, even when they try get someone to get rid of all their romance novels) and my book next to me. I get a few pages read during the commercials.

Always carry a book with me just in case, but I have a very short commute to the office - usually less than 10 minutes - so have never gotten into audio books. A friend gave me the first Harry Potter on tape and I nearly ran off the road listening to it. I tried listening to it when I went to bed but though I have trouble sleeping most of the time I fell asleep listening to the tape so I gave up on audio - just not me, I guess.

I have found recently that not only can I read to myself while my husband is reading aloud to our son, but I even absorb some of what he's reading. 8-o

LOL Julianne I have dial up too and do the same thing!

I always have a book in my car or my work bag. The other day I ended up reading while I was stuck(not moving) in road construction. I usually fall asleep reading every night.

Unfortunately I can't read in a moving vehicle without getting ill and haven't had much luck reading while on exercise equipment either. I should give an audio book a try.

I'm not that talented Colleen! And Mary, for a minute there It hought you meant surfing like with a surfboard! THAT would be some serious talent!

I do take a book with me but mostly for when I'm waiting for an appointment and sometimes if I'm stuck in a drivethru and figure I'll have a 5-10 min or so wait. A lot of my reading is at work between samples then before bed

I listen to audio books sometimes but find I often get tired of waiting for the narrator and grab the book and read it myself.

Wow, some of you have clearly gotten a PhD in multi-tasking with books, I'm in awe. Like several of you I get car sick if I try to read in the car (or on an airplane) but I have a hard time finding audio books that I like, most narrators grate on my nerves and yes, I get impatient, I can read lightyears faster than any narrator can talk.

On a note many of you will understand better than my family and friends (who laughed and rolled their eyes), I just bought a new purse because it is big enough to carry a MMP or two, unlike my current purse!

Susanna, what do you mean talented? You can't apply nail polish? For me, the problem was always impatience. I couldn't sit and wait for it to dry. But if I do one hand at a time... It's even easier if I'm reading a trade-size book. They lay open so nicely.

I've got my 12-yr-old taking books to go, too. When we're waiting for our food order, waiting at the post office, standing in line at the market... Of course, she's an expensive date. The books she likes are much more rare on PBS. Fortunately, all our relatives know her #1 gift of choice is a gift card to B&N or A'zon. LOL

Read in the kitchen while cooking, in the bathroom while...ahem....read in the car at red lights, read during commerials on tv (which I rarely watch because I'm always reading!), read in the car when I'm a passenger on a long trip and of course my job allows me to read at work when its slow.  My off days I devour books - I got 3 read in 2 days this past weekend.

I have read while manning the grill.  I used to burn food because I would come inside to do other things in teh kitchen and then would lose track of time.  Now I sit in a lawn chair and read while babysitting the grill.

I also have a slow computer. I don't have dial up.  But I use a wireless connection and my computer is 8 yrs old which is a dinosaur in computer years.  My wireless connection never seems to be fast and so I can frequently read a paragraph while waiting for a page to download.  I had dila up in WA and I got a lot of reading done there while pages were loading. When I'm loading CDS onto ITunes it can take a good 10 min to load up an audiobook. So I read while it's loading and then just take a break to pop a new CD in when needed.
