The author wrote many novels but only two featuring Terry Clane. This is the first. Interestingly, Clane was to be the prime character in a series. One can only speculate why this may be so. Be that as it may, Clane is an unusual character for he understood much about the Chinese life and philosophy of the time. He collected a sleeve gun which was used to commit a murder. The only catch is that his is missing and he has links to the murdered man, Jacob Mandra, whose life is unsavory at best. As the plot unwinds the reader gets to know Clane and becomes involved in the investigation. The reader is also blessed with a good look at early mid twentieth century San Francisco. Since I enjoyed this character so much I need to locate the second Clane novel.
A lawyer in his day life, the author wrote many novels in this style as well as true crime novels and books about travel. His work appears under a number of pen names including Kyle Corning, A.A. Fair, Charles M. Green, Carleton Kendrake, Charles J. Kenny, Robert Parr, and Les Tillray. I liked this unusual novel in the author's list and enjoy dipping into writings of this era. They are fun and give me an idea of what readers were choosing for mysteries of that time.
