Music Words Opera Level Ii/Teacher's Manual Author:Carroll Rinehart, William Wilcox, Sandra Purrington, Karen Rice, Marthalie Furber, Clifford Brooks Music! Words! Opera! is a series based on the work of master teachers and opera professionals who have discovered ways of showing that opera has a unique capability to "turn on the light" of learning. Designed for both classroom and music teachers, the authors have provided everything needed to make clear to children the whole concept ... more »of storytelling with music. In acquainting children with opera as an expressive medium, they acquire basic understanding of character, setting, and plot. As the lessons proceed logically and sequentially, language skills are exercised and sharpened. In the process, children come to enjoy opera as a powerful form of storytelling. The Teacher's Manual includes well over 250 pages and is designed in a three-ring binder format so individual units may be removed or supplemental materials added. Of special interest to both teachers and children are the large photographs depicting scenes from professional performances and the lively illustrations used throughout the guide. The material is divided into two sections: Section I - "Listen and Discover" "Listen and Discover" introduces students to the story-sharing process by acquainting them with the operas in each level. Within each level, the operas progress from the easiest to the most advanced. Each unit/opera contains: * Introduction includes background information about the opera, composer, and librettist. Introduces the cast, settings, and story with wonderful photographs from professional productions. * Lesson Plans suggest possible step-by-step methods of instruction and supplemental information, and include reduced copies of corresponding Student Studybook pages. * What to Listen For with Audio Tape provides the teacher with musical descriptions and excerpts from the entire work. The "What To Listen For" section contains the descriptions, libretto, and score excerpts related to the tape. The cassettes contain numbered excerpts to be used with the students during the lessons. * Student Studybook accompanies each opera and may be used by the teacher to evaluate comprehension as they invite children to show what they have learned, often by indicating their understanding in visual terms. Upon completion, each child has a "diary" of the opera studied or created by the class. Section II - "Create and Produce" "Create and Produce" (C&P), moves from the study of an opera to the creation of one. Teachers will work together with students to write the words and compose the music, then bring the opera to life in an in-class production or as a staged performance. Students are eased through the process of developing their own characters and plot, expressing nonverbal ideas through body language, and learning to improvise music to fit a poetic text. All this is done through step-by-step sequencing of lesson plans. * Composition Phase - students organize scenes, write their libretto, arias, and choruses, establish mood, find the accents in their text, determine the meter and melodic rhythm, and make up their own melodies. Classroom teachers who are not musicians will need a music mentor to assist with portions of this unit. * Production Phase - students assume the roles of all people required to produce an opera: designing and making sets, props and costumes, planning and carrying out the technical support, and assuming the various singing roles. The original opera is rehearsed and performed, and students are invited to critique it as well. The cassette tape accompanying the Teacher's Manual contains excerpts from the following acclaimed PolyGram recordings: The Barber of Seville (Il barbiere di Siviglia) - Berganza, Benelli, Ausensi, Mantovani, Ghiaurov, Corena.
