I am one of those people with allergies (I know!  I'm sorry!  They're not life threatening, just annoying!), so I very much prefer to get books from a non-smoking, furry pet-free home.  I've been looking for some specific books and, in my searches, have come across a few shelves where I'd like to request 3 or 4 others (okay, let's be honest, there are some shelves that I would take in their entirety) and possibly work a deal with the sender.  The thing that frustrates me, though, is that there is no uniform way to figure out if people have smokers or furry critters at home, so I don't want to spend all of those credits ahead of time and then have my requests declined and have my credits tied up for a long time.

So my question is: Would it be feasible to have checkboxes that members fill out check boxes of  "Smokers at home Y/N" "Dogs at home Y/N" "Cats at home Y/N"...along those lines that pop up when you go to a bookshelf?  Do you think people would go for this?  I've noticed that there are profiles that mention smokers, pets, etc, but not uniformly.

If I'm understanding your question, you're saying you are already on a specfic members shelf, right?  Why not just PM the member and ask if they have pets or if theirs is a smoking household?  You can also click on their profile to see if they've mentioned it there.

A lot of people specify that information on their bookshelf header.  I know I do as I have 4 kitties who are avid readers.  It might not be a bad idea though.  I would send in feedback to the administrators using the Contact Us button at the bottom of the page with that suggestion.

If you choose a book from a search, you can click on Order more from this member, and it will tell you their name.  You could PM them and say you have a multiple book order and want to know if they smoke or had pets, before you order.  Members, may or may not, respond well to this - but it's an option.

I have PMed a few people asking if their profile doesn't state one way or another about smokers or pets (sorry, should have mentioned that before -- I do usually check the profile).  They either haven't responded (and have read the PM), or, in one case, the book I was initially interested in was taken already because of FIFO.

Purvi - I would send a suggestion to Contact PBS.  To have something like that that automates in a profile  would be handy and we can use the space for other info :)

When more than one member sends in the same suggestion - they take it more seriously.  I think it's a good idea, too!

I have 3 dogs.  No smoking in my house!

Purvi, I think like the others that you have an excellent idea!  You do need to contact TPTB with your suggestion. They are open for suggestions and they even ask for them in their newsletters.

I think with the FIFO system that might be a little too much programming.  It would have to then match people up based on what they checked and the order in which the books were posted into the system.  If you are trying to get a deal on the books from one sender you have to PM them anyway.

Due to the nature of swapping, we can't always be sure where the books we have originated.

My home is smoke and pet free, but if I'm the 2nd or 3rd or subsequent reader, I can't say for sure that thte books have always been in a smoke and pet free environment.  But I can say that they don't smell of smoke.

Don't worry about the programming involved -- sometimes programmers enjoy a challenge or can come up with an idea to work around it. Definitely send your idea to the team, Purvi, so they can consider it for future upgrades.

When looking for a smoke-free household (and sending your suggestion), you might request different options for "tobacco smoke" and "fireplace/wood stove/campfire smoke".  I am allergic to tobacco smoke, and never thought about other kinds until a lady with a woodburning stove politely declined my RCs, and someone else did because they'd taken the book camping and read it near the campfire.

Also, while you're suggesting, be specific about "hairy" pets.  Can you get books from folks with hamsters? Sugar gliders? Ferrets?  Maybe options would be:

  • I have a dog(s)
  • I have a cat(s)
  • I have other fur-bearing pets in my home
  • I have no fur-bearing pets

I think this sounds like a good, easy idea for folks with allergies to be able to more readily identify members whose shelves would "work" for them -- would be an added bonus if we could search for boxer members that way too.
