This is of the classic adventure genre. Many obstacles, some unforseen, others, well, should have been anticipated. There's a mix of historical information about the Nile region and the people who live there, as well as other expeditions that have gone before.

There were also snippets of other adventures -- mountaineering, boating -- as well. At times, I found the writing a bit stilted, but overall it held my attention. I actually found the last 1/3 of the book to be the most interesting.
