A goes back into his past and describes for Charlie some of the most horrific incidents that he had encountered when he was a young officer during the 1960's and 1970's. Charlie begins to have a horrid affair with a woman he meets while on Patrol and eventually falls in love with her. He is married and, eventually, his wife finds out. Charlie begins to feel torn between his wife and his girl friend and confides in Lt. A with his problem. He begins to rely on Lt. A to help him with his problem. The stories that Lt. A recounts for him help take Charlie's mind off his pressing problems with his on going affair. Milton learned early in his cop career that women were not afraid to open their doors when someone knocked on them during the daylight hours. This was his modus operandi. Milton specialized in raping Washington University and medical students in and around the West End and Central West End corridors of the city of St. Louis in his off-duty hours. After making surveillance of a potential victim, Patrolman Brookins would knock on their door, pistol paralyze them, enter and brutally beat, rape and rob them. These were ancient times for law enforcement. There was no DNA evaluation, no computers, just detectives plying their trade through, interviews ambition, and determination. In and around the city's universities, rape was a vocation of the scores of ghetto young men who were convinced that these young coeds actually wanted to have sex with them. It was a racial sex game, played with brutality. After raping his victims, Milton would leave taunting notes to the police daring them to catch him. The notes led the police to believe that the rapist might be a city cop. Two detectives (George Hotsenpiller and Bobby Matthews) worked the cases, which were mostly cold and unsolvable without a lucky break. Several innocent men were arrested and incarcerated for the rapes. Victims identified the wrong suspects in line-ups, and later recanted their identifications. The rapes continued after suspects were incarcerated. Milton bragged in his notes that he had raped over 50 women. The detectives plodded along, interviewing and investigating until they got their lucky break. As a kid growing up on Long Island, I struggled with an unknown psychological need to wear a uniform and a strong desire to be a part of an organization. My search would take me through Little League, Cub Scouts, and various fraternal organizations. This desire would only be fulfilled after joining the NYPD in February of 1984. Somewhere during my twenty-year career, I was transformed from that kid into a veteran New York City police detective. This is my evolution from a middle-class suburban kid with simple values who naively thought the "projects" were a homework assignment into a veteran detective working in some of the most unforgiving neighborhoods of New York City. With this transformation comes the ability to separate the daily exposure to the dark side of human nature from your own life-sustaining core beliefs. Many will fail to acquire this ability and fall victim to drugs, alcohol, divorce, crime, and even suicide. This is a process which I have come to call Turning Blue. This is my story of how I dealt with life-changing experiences at home while my gun belt and uniform hung safely in my locker.
