I have less than 100 pages left on this book and have to say I'm enjoying it immensely - but the subject matter is very dark at times - don't expect *chick lit lite* with this one. Mary follows a long line in her family *trade* of midwife but she wants to be a surgeon and goes to Washington City at the start of the Civil War. This is a no-holds-barred look at how deplorable conditions were for our soldiers as well as some incompetence on the part of politicians and generals. |

ETA: Just realized I already have this one on my wishlist. I went through all that wishlist angst for nuthin'! Last Edited on: 4/8/10 10:58 AM ET - Total times edited: 1 |

Well, Valli -- I'm awfully glad that you discovered you already had the book wishlisted -- sorry you had to experience such stress and angst. Next time, feel free to pm me and I'll put the book on my wl and then have the book sent to you when the wish is granted. I have lots of room on my WL because I try to WL only books that I can't get at our library or that I know I want to keep or that belong to a series I'm collecting or that I can't easily find at my local UBS. So, my WL is available to you or any others who have maxed out on their WL. Really, truly. ETA: Of course, that assumes that I don't want to WL the same book! BTW, I just finished this yesterday and I've also mentioned this in the what are you reading thread. This is a good book, but there are some very disturbing scenes re: medical care (or lack of) among other things. Very powerful and very disturbing, and not a prettified novel by any means. |
