He had been loaned to a powerful and mysterious group in Tokyo to help extract a British secret agent from Mongolia. The elaborate briefing in Japan had been made delightful by the charming girl, Kikou, whether she was a spy or not. His present disguise was the most thorough of his career. But now half of the efficient team was missing. Some wandering Mongolians were almost too friendly, but he did acquire a tired pony and so finally reached the rendezvous to learn ex-partner and agent had come and gone.
Silk's best chance of reaching freedom lay over the border in Tibet, a two years' walk. But the Chinese army and some violent Russian spies halted his plane. Through tense suspicion and suspense. Silk worked to find a way just to stay alive.
Again Mr Harvester gives us a picture of a strange and little known land while telling an exciting story. His customary discussion of today's problems, and the portents for the future, give his books additional background and an extra dimension of awareness.
