He is called "our life," for through Him Christians are quickened and made spiritually alive. He is "the way," the "mediator between God and men." He is "as an hiding-place from the wind, and a covert from the tempest; as rivers of water in a dry place, as the shadow of a great rock in a weary land." He is the "Sun of Righteousness," to illuminate the pathway of the Christian, through the dark mazes of life to the cloudless climes of endless day. He is "the vine" from which Christians, as branches, receive all their moral strength and fruitfulness. He is "the city of refuge" in which the sinner is safe from the avenger of blood. He is the "Breaker" that has come up before the world, in all the majesty of his power, removing the obstacles that hedged up the way of salvation, and leading the ransomed hosts of the Lord on to the promised land of rest. He is also the foundation on which all our hopes of pardon and immortality rest. He is "our hope." Christ is presented under the metaphor of a "foundation," and the church as a spiritual building resting on this foundation. Every building to stand must have a foundation. Thus it is with every system of philosophy and religion. Christ is the foundation of the Christianity of the Bible. In erecting a building there must be, I. A foundation prepared.
