I got this book for Christmas and I just started reading it.  Since the book came out people have been trying to get me to read this and I had no interest in it.  I didn't know anything about Bengali Indians and I thought that she would use a lot of Indian words and history that I wouldn't understand or even be interested in.  I was so wrong, she writes so beautifully and makes things easy to understand.  I love the story and the history of the characters.  I'm almost done with the book and I see that they made a movie from the book.   I am so glad that I got this book and was finally forced to read it.  I hope others enjoyed this book as much as I did!

I liked it.  I've not seen the movie, though.

I actually saw the trailer for the movie first and wanted to read the book before I saw the movie.  I loved it.  It was a great story of living in a new country and leaving family behind as well as the relationship between parents and children in general.  I would recommend this book to almost anyone.

I loved it and read it twice in two years.  You can really get a sense of the characters and how they feel about their lives.  Very haunting at times.  A great read.

I really enjoyed the book, and her other book (Interpreter of Maladies). The movie was also enjoyable, but not if you're expecting to see the book on screen. (Personally, I had also wished they'd chosen a main actor I wasn't already familiar with... but, that's me.)

I read this for a Lit class last fall and liked it so much I decided to keep it when I was selling all my other books back at the end of the semester. I'm a poor college student, so I think this says a lot. Hehe. Lahiri writes beautifully, and her characters are so full of emotion and life. The book is not flawless, however. I think it starts to lose its momentum toward the end, but it's still a great read!
