Napoleon III is to most Americans a historical mystery. He was not in fact a direct descendant of Napoleon but a nephew. Regardless of lineage he guided France as Emperor from 1848 to 1870.

His influence in world affairs is rivalled only by Great Britain during the period.
The Maximillian adventure, the Crimean War, The occupation of Indo-China. His disastrous leadership during the late 1860's led to the collapse of his Government when he was captured at the Battle of Sedan in the Franco-Prussian War. A 6 week affair that ended with Germany besieging Paris and finally conquering it. Some historians claim this defeat was one of the causes of the First World War. The author does not support this theory but it is mentioned.

Napoleon III died, exiled, in England 3 years later in 1873.

His influence on French culture is often ignored. He rebuilt the city of Paris and established the nation's railroad system. Fortunately the author of this book does a thorough job of covering many of the aspects of Napoleon III's life that most history books miss.

The author has done his research well. He presents a compelling portrait of a man with somewhat good intentions but woefully misguided in his actions and let down by those he trusted.

I have read 3 seperate books on the reign of Napoleon III and by far this is the most informative and well written. Biographies can often be a dry recitation of facts with little else. That is not the case here. The author keeps the reader engaged throughout.
