There are now a perkily obtrusive line of buttons telling me what I 'need to know about' above the tabs on the my-account page ... any way of getting rid of them, or making them go away once I've clicked them until something changes in the things they point to? They take up a lot of real estate and they're kind of annoying.

Nope more people read CMT so thats usually where they make announcements or try to clear up issues.
