Samuel Taylor Coleridge is one of the few thinkers who, in the course of time, will own this famous nineteenth century, despite the failure of his speculations on Reason and Understanding. He is called a purposeless theorizer, a man of genius, the acutest of metaphysicians, and what more I know not; but 'to me his true merit consists in here and there dropping an idea which may be the centre to encircle millions of others. His well-known essay concerning a science of Pure Method refers to many things connected with thinking; biit it works out nothing definitely. That which he left undone I will now venture to attempt. Should I fail, the eifort to achieve the desired result may help to suggest to other thinkers the path by which success may be attained. The Elements of Pure Method may be presented naturally under three heads, as follows: -- Correlation. Arrangement. Classification. And these should be explained fundamentally, so as to form three rules by which any learner may truly methodize.
