No longer collecting--books have been packed and shipped. Thank you to all who responded via the forum and private email.
I am collecting books for my daughter, who is a new graduate and will be teaching in an inner-city elementary school in the fall. She would like a generous number of books in her classroom library to reflect her students, i.e., to be about children of color--African American, Native American, and Hispanic. She is also collecting poetry books and some of her favorite "how to " books for writing. Since I am new to PBS, I am still collecting credits, but I thought I would go ahead and ask for help. Please see my wishlist (which came from my daughter) for specific titles and authors. Any other titles by the listed author are also of interest. I will be adding to the wishlist. Thank you.

I have taught in inner city schools for my entire teaching career, so I have some experience. Some of my absolute favorites: Hip Hop Poetry (comes with a CD and my kids LOVED it). White Socks Only (for a great introduction to racism/segregation). Bud, Not Buddy for an intro to the Jazz Age/Great Depression. The People Could Fly (awesome collection of African American folktales). The Watsons Go To Birmingham (about church attacks during the Civil Rights era). Harvesting Hope (the story of Cesar Chavez). Esperanza Rising (just awesome).
If you need any more suggestions or have any questions, just let me know. I have been teaching for 11 years, so I have seen it all!
