Hello. So I'm pretty new to PBS, and I just received a book that doesn't meet the required condition on here. There's writing in the first fifteen or so pages, including obscenities. Should I request to get my credit back, or...?

Thanks. :)

The book you described is not postable and you are well within your rights to request your credit be returned.  The person who sent it may or may not return your credit, but I would certainly ask.

Mark it received with a problem, damaged by sender and describe the problem in the box to PM the member (within the transaction, so all the information stays with the transaction). Asking for your credit back is up to you but if you want it back, it's best to clearly ask for it.

Thanks everyone! I just marked it as damaged and asked to have my credit returned.

I wouldn't have marked it "damaged by sender" but "does not meet posting guidelines" but a RWAP is a RWAP. Even if they think that it should fall under the textbook exemption (writing in the book), they should have checked with you before sending it, but having said that, obscentities written in the book definitely makes it a RWAP, textbook exemption or not! Sorry this happened to you!

"does not meet posting guidelines "

Is that an option? I thought the only options under RWAP are "Wrong book received", "Received with a problem, damaged by sender", "Received with a problem, damaged by USPS" and "Violates requestor conditions" option.

Edited to add: Double checked the rules and a 'book [that] appears to have been unacceptable for swapping at PBS before it was put in the mail' would fall under Damaged by Sender, so the OP marked it correctly. ' wou'

The "official" problem options are:

  • Wrong Book
    • This includes inappropriate items such as ARCs or leaflets/pamphlets/booklets without ISBNs
    • This includes the wrong versions of books (ie, the ISBN, title, author or booktype of the book you received doesn't match the PBS listing of the book you requested)
    • This includes regular-font books when you requested a Large Print book
    • If you received a book you did not request (not just the wrong version of a book you DID request but a title you do not recognize), you should NOT mark the book received - you should PM the sender as described in I received a book I didn't request!.
      • this may have been a mixed-up request and can be easily rectified.
  • Damaged by Sender
    • This means the book appears to have been unacceptable for swapping at PBS before it was put in the mail
    • This includes books that originally came with MEDIA materials - if the MEDIA materials do not accompany the book or are nonfunctioning the book is "damaged by sender".
    • This includes books packaged using tape applied to the book if the book is damaged and rendered unrepostable by opening the package.
    • Read more about sender-damaged books here
  • Damaged by USPS
    • This means that the book's poor condition appears to be the result of its journey in the mail.
    • This includes books that appear to have been poorly packaged for mailing by the sender.
    • Read more about USPS-damaged books here
  • Requestor Conditions Violation
    • This means the book does not meet the specifications in your Requestor Conditions
    • Read more about Requestor Conditions violations here.

Yeah, unless it is a recent change, I do not believe there is a "does not meet posting guidelines" option.  At least there wasn't when I had to RWAP a book about a week ago.

I would also considering reporting this issue to PBS.  A book not meeting posting rules is one thing, but a book with obscenities written in is beyond inappropriate.
