"The greatest disgrace of humankind is the failure of the strong to protect the weak. We don't need monsters, Gil, we are the monsters."

Sometimes books that move back and forth between narrators and time periods irritate me, but the distinctions between 1629 shipboard life and 1989 isolated island life worked well here. The author was inspired by an actual shipwreck and touches on lots of issues for discussion - bullying, magical realism, survival, class, and historical research.
