This is one of those fascinating reads that you will either love or hate, i doubt there will be to many betweens. If you like to curl up with a deep serious book that at times can take your breath away at the possibility of living out a dream... than you will enjoy this novel. The story of a school teacher who goes to Lisbon and follows an authors life. I found it quite interesting how this man stepped into someone elses life and walked the path of someone he found curious and attracted to know more about. Most of us have someone we would like to see inside their lifes path. Life of another is never what it seems to an outsider, compelling me to keep the night light burning and the pages turning. I liked it.

This is my first Mercier book. I bought it in Venice, Italy, to read on the long trip home, and it did keep me reading. However, there were times when it was hard to fathom what the main character's motivation was for his search for a dead author. Obviously, he was having a life crisis, but still! I ended up liking the book pretty well, and it added some very good quotes to my collection. Pretty heavy on the philosophical, but worth my time and effort.
