From the back:

Eddie Miles is one of a dying breed: A Windy City hack who knows every street and back alley of his beloved city and takes its recent descent into violence personally. But what can one drive do about a killer targeting streetwalkers and another terrorizing cabbies? Precious little- until the night he witnesses one of them in action...

------

This is a moody, atmospheric tale of a cabdriver who prowls the lonely streets of Chicago. Though divorced and jaded, Eddie Miles is a good man who tries to do the right thing. So when he finds a terribly injured girl lying in the street, he tries to help her. He sees a van pulling away and is convinced that it belongs to the murderer who is killing teenage prostitutes. But the cops don't seem to listen or care about the death of poor African American streetwalkers. Meanwhile, a robber is killing cab drivers and each fare may be his last. This book is dark and brooding and really made an emotional impact on me. It is not one of those thrillers that careens forward with nonstop action, but it will stick with me for a long time.
