i mailed a couple of weeks ago, and the last thing on the DC tracking is this: 6/16/2008 11:06 AM - Notice Left - xxx i sent a PM a few days ago in case the person hadn't seen the notice, and didn't get a reply. the account is on hold. how long will the post office hold the book (sent Media Mail), and what will they do with it when that time is up? |

If the person put their mail on hold (as in for vacation) then it would be whenever they get back. Normally when a notice left is done you get about 2 weeks. |

It is odd for a notice to be left for a book. I guess they must have a PO Box or similar cluster box situation that the book wouldn't fit in. Anyway, when a notice of attempted delivery is left for any mailpiece other than Express Mail, the item is returned to sender after 20 days. After 10 days a clerk fills out another pink/peach slip indicating that this is the second notice and specifies the date (10 days away) that the item will be returned unclaimed. (The addressee can request redelivery on the USPS website.)
If the recipient left town (which may be why their account is on hold) and they happened to put their mail on hold as well, the package should have been scanned as Delivered on the day it arrived. That is the practice at my Post Office, anyway. |

Tim is not quite correct, The second notice goes out 5 days after the first notice and the package is sent back 10 days after that, totaling 15 days. It sounds like the person you sent it to is on vacation however. If that is the case and they requested that their mail be held, the PO will hold for the time requested-up to 30 days. |
