Might I recommend (only one):  The Virgin Blue by Tracy Chevalier.  A suspenceful, moving story of a young woman who finds herself in Europe with too much time on her hands.  She goes off to visit cousins and finds herself captivated with a painting.  This begins her adventure in unravelling a family mystery.  The book includes her story and that of the female ancestor from centuries before.  (A contemporary novel and historical fiction all in one!)
