Here is our October Thread for books.

Last night I started The Ship of Brides :: Jojo Moyes

I know lots of people have read it but I just put it on the WL Virtual Box so I figure I will get it read. It is set in 1946 dealing with  a ship of War Brides sailing from Australia to England. Sounds like my type of book

Has anyone read it?

I am hoping to finish the Alexander and Tatiana trilogy this month.  The final one is The Summer Garden by Paullina Simons.

I will be finishing up Blood & Beauty by Sarah Dunant tonight.  Will probably start Heresy by S.J. Parris next.

Just starting Elizabeth Chadwick's The Love Knot after finishing the Eden trilogy last night (The Treasure of Eden by S.L. Linnea). Debbie

I've just started reading The Man in the Queue by Josephine Tey. My first book by this author. Having trouble with the stilted language.

Has anyone else read this author and would you recommend reading them?

I'm so glad to see that Ms. Chadwick is doing more books about William Marshall.  I loved her first two!

Alrighty the steroids have kicked in and I'm not sleeping, so rather than raid the pantry I will post!  I'm reading Empire Rising by Sam Barone as part of my Learn your ABCs challenge.  It's no great shakes as a book but very readable.  It reminds me of the old biblical Sea Peoples books that I read ages ago.  This is placed around 3750 BCE in the fertile crescent area of the Middle East. Given what is happening in the world today, I find it topically interesting.

Leslie, my favorite Josephine Tey book is Daughter of Time. That's really good!

Reading Lost Among the Living by Simone St James now.  Have to mail it out tomorrow.  I WILL finish it!  LOL  Great little haunted house story.  I'm sending this one to Alice, so stalk her if you want it next.

After this, reading Mrs Houdini a Novel by Victoria Kelly, also for Alice.  She's got another one of my books in the pile, but it's more Fantasy.

Last month I read Circling the Sun: A Novel by Paula McLain.  Did not realize until the very end that it was based on an actual person!  I enjoyed it quite a bit.  Set in Africa mostly.

Enjoying The Shadowy Horses by Susanna Kearsley.  My first novel by this author.  At last I am reading Frankenstein too, an unabridged version which is very good.  No, it's not because Halloween is coming but because I put it on a reading challenge and it's time!  No one else has posted so I'll just add that I loved The Shadowy Horses and have begun The Wild Irish.

Susanna Kearsley is one of my very favorite authors! Jump on any book of hers! Debbie

I've started The Fatal Flame by Lyndsay Faye.  This is the third installment of her 1850s New York City crime novels featuring copper star Timothy Wilde.  I hope there is a new addition to the series soon; I have really enjoyed these very much!

Thanks DebKit!  I will do just that.  Well, since no one has commented since I did I thought I would share my thoughts about Wild Irish.  It's a darned good yarn and best of all introduced me to Grace O'Malley who was a pirate, a rebel, a mother and more.  I've put three books  about her on my WL.  Now I am reading Dragon's Lair by Sharon Kay Penman and Mrs. Lincoln's Rival about Salmon P. Chase's daughter, Kate.  Of course, I am loving Lair but not so sure about Rival yet.  Will share about both later!

I see lots of chatter on the mysteries thread and from many people during games but I can't help wondering what is happening here.  Are people getting tired of chatting here and looking for new spots?  Does anyone have any thoughts about this?

R E K - I haven't posted much anywhere  lately. Seems like I'm a bit burned out on reading lately and I'm hoping that this phase passes. I enjoy seeing what others are reading and liking and storing it away for future reference!

I think our forum lost steam when the PBS membership changed and so many here dropped out.

I echo what Jeanne said above. I've been busy with other things and slacked off some on reading. But I am really enjoying Lilac Girls by Martha Hall Kelly. It's based on a true story about Ravensbruck-Hitler's only concentration camp exclusively for women - and many of the characters are based on real people as well. I have been very moved by the story of these women. Highly recommended!

So much for Mrs. Lincoln's Rival!  I didn't like it.  Didn't like the characters or the writing.  Thought the characters were shallow and self-centered.  The best thing about the book was the author's comments which were more readable.  But I loved the Penman book, Dragon's Lair.  My copy is an HB and I don't even remember when or where I got it but it is available FREE to anyone who wants it.  Found two pages that have what looks like coffee stains.  Too bad!  It's such a beautiful book otherwise.

I finished I am Half-Sick of Shadows by Alan Bradley, the fourth installment of the delightful Flavia de Luce mysteries.  It is Christmas time at Buckshaw and Flavia, an eleven year old intrepid sleuth and chemist par excellence, has laid plans to capture Father Christmas as he lands on her home's rooftop.  Flavia of course, has made her own mixture of birdlime to literally stop the jolly old gent in his tracks.  Flavia's father, the Colonel, always very short of ready cash since the death of Flavia's mother, has rented out Buckshaw to a film crew.   They have arrived at the De Luce family mansion to produce a film starring the glamorous Phyllis Wyvern and as is usual with Flavia, death makes an unexpected appearance.  I think this is my favorite thus far and give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
