I just finished this book. I give it 3 stars out of 5. Possibly because it's a translation, or maybe because I just can't relate to ANY of the characters I didn't love this book. Most of the time it seemed highly un-realistic and at other times highly predictable. I was halfway through and I already knew how it was going to pan out. Though, I do think this would make an interesting movie. A movie would possibly be better than the actual book. I don't understand what all the comotion was about this book. Though 3rd quarter of the book was fun to read and I did like it, the rest of the book didn't really hold up well for me. I also didn't like the ending. Did anyone else read it? and what were your thoughts?

I read it and loved it!! It made my top ten list for (I think it was) 2005, the year I read it. I liked being immersed in the culture of Japan in the way that you can only get with a native author, and thought the translation was really well done. It was quite different from anything else I'd read at the time. Cheryl |

Most of the people in my class (I read it for school) loved it. I guess it just wasnt my thing. :) Have you read her second book? I saw it in the book store and almost bought it out of curiosity...but I wasn't too sure..so I didn't. I think it's about high school girls...that might have been better for me. I think part of my problem with out is that I couldn't relate to the characters...I'm 24 and I'm starting to feel that I don't fit with the books about highschoolers but I also don't fit with the adult books...and you can only read so much chick lit lol :) So I'd be interested to hear what people thought about the authors other book.

I haven't read the second one, but the third one (real world) is supposed to be on the way to me from here--but it's about to go lost, I think. :( Her books are non-series so they don't need to be read in order. I hear you about not being able to relate to the age thing...but sometimes it's just the author's writing style or something too, because I have read books with younger protagonists (I'm almost--gasp!--50 now) that I enjoyed a lot--but others, not so much. And certainly some with protagonists that are my age that I hated and wanted to throw against the wall. LOL I should have my daughter try reading "Out" and see what she thinks--she is 23 but she loves all things Japanese so she'd probably enjoy it. Who knows? Probably a lot of it is just that 'different strokes for different folks' thing. :) Cheryl |
