I sent someone a children's book that I had purchased some years ago; it was wrapped in plastic and had been sold as new.

It turns out there's some kind of game you're supposed to be able to play on the front cover and the receiver says some of the pieces are missing.

Am I reponsible for this? I guess it's kind of like the printing error problem. I don't think the book is still in print.

If the description of the book found when the ISBN is entered mentions the inclusion of any other part: ie:map, puzzle, poster,3D glasses, et cetera; then it must be included. Did the look-up on the book mention anything like that? Or did the book itself have a reminder on the cover?

I learned something very helpful w/ this question. This is why I have stayed away from books with extra material.

The below is from the Help Center. It does not appear that the game pieces needed to be included unless they were required for the book to be useful -- and if they were required, the book was not postable.

Allowed:

  • Books that originally came with non-media items, if the non-media materials are NOT REQUIRED for the book to be useful.  The non-media items do not have to be included to be postable here.

Not allowed:

  • Books that require supplementary non-media materials to be useful (non-media materials cannot be sent by MediaMail, and original non-media materials cannot be expected to be included with a used book)

Well, I guess it's debatable.  The desciption does mention a game on the cover, but not how many pieces should have been included. I'm afraid it never occurred to me to check. The book itself is still useful. I guess if there's no obvious right answer I should refund the credit.

It's not a story, it's a book of puzzles: http://www.paperbackswap.com/MindGames-Pattern-Games-Ivan-Moscovich/book/0761120203/

Non-media that is not required to use the book does not need to be included. Books that require non-media cannot be posted at all.

Looking at the book, I can't tell for certain if the book can be used without the non-media. It looks like a lot of the puzzles, etc do need the pieces that came with the book so my best guess is that the book isn't swappable at all on PBS and shouldn't have been posted in the first place, but not ever seeing the actual book and the accompanying non-media, that's just a guess from the description.

I don't think the pieces are used outside the cover. My son has another book in the same style ( http://www.paperbackswap.com/Mindgames-Network-Games-Ivan-Moscovich/book/076112019X/) and those are attached to the cover and not removable.

Well, the receiver marked it and said not to worry about it, but I responded that if she thinks the book isn't usable without the pieces I'll refund the credit.

That sounds like a very fair and reasonable solution.
